Words from a Sunday Morning...

Heard this story in Sacrament meeting this Sunday:

A wealthy man and his only son loved to spend time together. They loved traveling and while on their journeys began to collect famous paintings. They were lucky enough to have Rembrandts, Monets, Vermeers, and others in their collection. They were surrounded by the beauty of the art they both loved.

The boy grew up and was one day called to serve in the Vietnam war. He went off to fight in this war to protect his world from the threat of communism. One day the man received word that his only son had been killed rescuing fellow soldiers. The father's grief overwhelmed him with it's strength. A few months after his son's death, his doorbell rang. As he answered the door, there stood on his doorstep a young man with a painting. He introduced himself as one of the soldiers his son has given his life to save. He offered the man the painting he had created for him. It was a picture of his son. The father thanked the young man for the beautiful painting and hung the painting in the place of honor above his fireplace.

The years passed and the father grew old and frail. After his death, all his art was to be auctioned as there was no heir to inherit. A famous auction hall was slated to sell the collection and many rich art collectors came to try and purchase some of the beautiful paintings. As they gathered, anxiously waiting for the sale to begin, there was palpable anticipation. As the auctioneer presented the first painting, it was the painting called The Son, the one given to the father after his son's death. It was painted by the unknown soldier and none of the rich collectors were interested. There were no bids on the painting. The auctioneer tried repeatedly to get a bid, any bid, on the painting. "Who will buy the painting of The Son?" "Anyone?" "Will anyone give me ten dollars for this painting of The Son?" It seemed none of the rich collectors were interested in the father's favorite painting. Finally from the back of the room there was a bid, a voice spoke firmly, "Ten dollars." It was the father's old gardener. He had worked for the family faithfully for many years and had fond memories of the father and son. He was retired now and could only afford to bid the small amount of ten dollars. The auctioneer called out, "SOLD", handed the picture to the cashier to collect the ten dollars and began to walk away from the podium. Pandimonium erupted as the other buyers began to call for the real auction to begin. "Where is the good stuff?!" "Bring out the masters now!" "We came to buy REAL art!!"

The auctioneer returned to the podium and explained to the audience, "I'm sorry. There was a stipulation in the will that was to remain unrevealed until this moment. You see, the father's will stated that the son's portrait be sold first and whoever bought it would inherit the whole estate."

Let us not forget our Father in Heaven's greatest gift this holiday season. Let us not reject His Son.

Don't Let This Happen to You :)

"He was a man with a chip on his shoulder. Everyone seemed in a conspiracy to slight or injure him."                                                                          --Somerset Maugham from Gentleman in the Parlour

Thanksgiving 2010

Gratitude is a state of heart. For some it comes as naturally as breathing and it is just as important. Gratitude can change your life for the better. If all of us counted at least some of our blessings everyday, we would live happier, more productive lives. The simple practice of enumerating your blessings on a daily basis makes you instantly more empathetic to others who may struggle or have less. Wouldn't the world be a wonderful place if we were more grateful, more joyful, and more compassionate? Let's work on that, shall we?

10 things I'm grateful for this Thanksgiving:

1.  My wonderfully patient, loving husband
2.  My daughters; talented and beautiful Brinlee and bright, sweet, good-hearted, beautiful McKenna
3.  My granddaughter; beautiful, sweet, Kimber, the red-headed wonder (Love that hair!)
4.  Two fabulous son-in-laws, Kyle and Adam, who treat my daughters so well
5.  My health
6.  Knowledge of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and the gospel
7.  This wonderful country and the freedoms we enjoy
8.  Our military, all those brave men and women who make such great sacrifices to keep us safe
9.  A home to keep me warm (that is when Rayzin will let me turn on the heater..haha), food in my belly, and clothes on my back. These are things that many live without much of the time.
10. A sense of humor

Now, for some of the Thanksgiving high jinks:

Me, the pie Nazi. Shape up or no pie for you!

McKenna attempting her first-ever cherry pie. It was DELISH (for cherry).

Adam and McKenna ready to head out to the Herpel celebration.

If you see these two together, get ready for some true tomfoolery!

Me playing with the cat while McKenna put up most of my Christmas lights outside. She's a lifesaver and she's even promised to do this for me "forever". LOL!

Me actually working. Never let it be said that I don't do yard work.

McKenna and Ray have a little tradition that they didn't get to do this year due to the early snow. They usually go out and cut a tree in the "wild" but this year Ray bought one, hence the "domesticated" tree as McKenna calls it.

Putting on the lights. I hate this job so have "delegated" it to the future generation. Thanks, Ken!

And TA-DA, the finished product. I love Christmas trees! Thanks, Kenna! Sorry we had to work so much of the weekend getting those decorations up. I guess that's what happens when you work and go to school, huh?

Unc and Aunt Kathy join us for Thanksgiving this year. This was their "off" year when their two boys are visiting the in-laws for Thanksgiving and we were the fortunate to have them with us. Unc brought his yummy rolls and Aunt Kathy brought a scrumpuous grape salad and her traditional chocolate dessert. It was so nice to get to have a good, long visit with Aunt Kathy. We had lots to catch up on and it's always fun spending time with her. The only thing she's NOT good at is letting us take her picture. :)
All in all, it was a peaceful, wonderful, fun-filled Thanksgiving with a focus on family and blessings.
Thank you, Heavenly Father, for the time spent together. We will cherish it always.

On a sad side-note, if you're wondering why no pictures of our Morris branch of the family, Brinlee and family were not in our midst over the Thanksgiving weekend. It was a terrible misunderstanding and we hope they will be back with us soon. We missed our little red-headed whirlwind.

My Oldest

This beautiful lady is my oldest child.

Twenty+ year's ago today she was born on a bright November day much like today. I cherish the moments I've had with her from that day. We've laughed, we've cried, we've been silly, we've been serious, but we've always loved each other. She's taught me so much, both as her mother and as grandmother to her oldest child. Yep, that's right. She's now a mother to her own little girl and Kimber Rae is one lucky little lady to have her for a mom.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Brin!!

October Reprise

My birthday was the first part of the month and even though we were pretty laid back it was still a lot of fun. The girls took me to Olive Garden for a birthday lunch. It's so relaxing to kick back and just have fun with my daughters and granddaughter. And I got to spend lots of time with Brin and Kimber since they stayed with us while Kyle was working out of town. FUN!

I think Kimber is so excited that THE RANGERS BEAT THE YANKEES AND WENT TO THE WORLD SERIES!! Ranger fever, baby!! Thanks to Sharee for my awesome Rangers shirt!!
I was privileged to attend the dance theater production at Tuacahn of Thriller with McKenna and Adam. It was the first time I'd attended and Kenna finally talked me into it. I have this weird phobia of people in freaky costumes so this was a bit of a test for my nerves. I probably shouldn't reveal that as some of my so-called friends will show up at my door next Halloween and try to touch me. Anyway, the show was utterly delightful but what was even even more entertaining was game 2 of the World Series was being played at the same time. My friend, Mike, was texting me updates on the game during the performance and when the lights would go up enough I would check my texts. Finally Adam got the iPhone app going so we could check it out during the show. People all around us were asking in hushed voices what the score was when they caught on to what we were doing.  I hope we were discreet enough as I HATE being disruptive of something that has taken so much work to put together. Thanks, Tuacahn for putting on such an exemplary night for us.
And a huge thanks to McKenna and Adam for a wonderful evening of thrills and chills!
Yeah, how would you like to be hugged by one of these freaky people?? I thought so.

Next was the hilariously funny bunco Halloween party hosted by Vicki Wittwer. This bunch is the epitome of a good time! Thanks girls!

In case you didn't recognize McKenna's costume, she's dressed as a college student. I'm the chubby pirate...Arrrrgh, matey!
Vicki and her crazy, old ladie hankie hanging from her pocket with Rachel in chains :)
Mother-daughter duo, Kenna and Ruby. Ain't they cute??

Next was Halloween! How merry a time it is with a little one around!
Our little "shicken", Kimber. She was so cute and so into the whole trick-or-treat shenanigans!

Kimber and her little Morris cousin, Tashli. Kimber has a strange fascination with birds.
Trick-or-treating with some Dunkley friends. She wanted to go in this house as they had a dog. Forget the candy, give her the woof-woof every time.

Here's what McKenna and Adam did on Halloween. They took off to Big Bear to help Adam's friend celebrate his birthday. Looks beautiful, right?
All in all we had a great time this October. How was yours?

October General Conference 2010

As always, there are one or two talks by the General Authorities that seem to be talking just to me. I'm sure many of you feel the same way. It has to do with what is going in our lives at the moment.

The two things that stood out for me this Conference were GOSSIP and FORGIVENESS. Both can be extremely powerful forces. One is negative and destructive and can change lives forever for the worse. The other is positive, constructive, and redeeming and can change lives forever for the better. One is of Satan. One is of God.

We've all been guilty of one and an instrument of the other. May we each be mindful of what the consequences can be of each and practice that which is of God.

On a lighter note, were you as uplifted by the special on the Kyiv, Ukraine temple as I was? Living in Utah is both a great blessing and an occassional curse. We are so saturated by the Church (notice I didn't say the Gospel) that we take it for granted. I am renewing my commitment to the gospel to be more like those who do not have the freedom and access that we do.

Artist statement: If life is compared to a river, it is easy to imagine floating with the current “gently down the stream”, but I have never found any good and worthwhile thing that came of its own accord, just the opposite. Every worthy goal takes constant, if gentle, effort. There is nothing static in the universe, after all. Fortunately the Lord does not require us to run faster than we have strength, (or row faster!) Amulek's warning against procrastination is so perfect. “You cannot say, when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent… There is a point of no return in just about everything.

To those who are struggling as couples regardless of the problem/s, have hope. Working together and showing the strength of unity, you can overcome. May the Lord bless you with that strength of unity. And remember that you are each other's support with the help of our Father in Heaven. Pray together, invite the spirit of forgiveness, attend church, and fortify your spirits which will in turn, fortify your marriage.

The Codeman
He was so incredibly helpful at the reception. He was there at the beginning to help us get the food set-up outside. And he was there at the end to help us get it all cleaned up. What a man!
Little Ayla, one of the "flower" girls. Adorable!

This photo cracks me up. Does Dan have a serious bone in his body? But look how absolutely gorgeous these girls are.
